A crash can duplicate a file. It can never lose one. Cleanroom writes the smaller copy, confirms it actually plays back, and only then offers to replace the original — and only if you asked it to.

The Keep

Move them into the Keep — a vault encrypted with AES-256-GCM on your iPhone or iPad, opened with Face ID, a passcode, or a PIN. Not hidden in a folder. Encrypted, in place, on the device.
The honest part: the Keep is excluded from iCloud and local backups, and its key never leaves this phone. That's what makes it private — and it means that if you lose, erase, or replace the phone, its contents are gone for good. No backup can bring them back. Export anything irreplaceable to Photos before you switch phones. The app says this too, before you put a single photo in.

Cleanroom sorts a library into ten piles. Eight of them are detections — and each one tells you what it measured and how sure it is. Two are simply facts about the library. None of them delete anything.
Photos flagged as possibly sensitive — you decide what to keep. A model on your device raises the flag, and nothing acts on it: nothing is hidden, moved, or deleted on its say-so. This is the pile that can go to the Keep instead of the trash.

The easiest pile to clear, and a surprisingly heavy one: screenshots are PNGs — lossless, and far larger than the same image needs to be. Photos tags most of them for you, so this pile is certain rather than a guess, and re-encoding one to HEIC shrinks it hard.

Found by a 64-bit perceptual fingerprint, not a byte-for-byte match — so burst frames, re-saves and light edits count too. An identical fingerprint is certain; a near match tells you exactly how many of the 64 bits differ.

Not a verdict — a fact read off the library. This original is a RAW camera file, several times larger than the JPEG beside it, and the JPEG is the one you actually look at. Re-encoding a RAW permanently discards sensor data, so Cleanroom never does it unless you ask for it.

Usually the single biggest win in a library. Compressing one to HEVC on your phone's own chip keeps the video and gives back most of the space it was taking.

Each pile wears its own colour here and in the app, so the two look like the same thing. Nothing is deleted because a category said so — a pile is a suggestion, you review it a photo at a time, and anything you clear passes through Recently Deleted first. The solid square is the Keep: Sensitive photos, and anything else you'd rather not leave in the open grid, can be sealed there instead of thrown away.

Every scan, every classification and every video compression runs on your iPhone or iPad's own chip, and no photo is ever uploaded — there is no account to create and no server of ours for a photo to go to. To be exact: the app does make network requests that have nothing to do with your photos. The free version asks Google for an ad, the App Store confirms a purchase, and your own iCloud originals download from Apple if you use iCloud Photos. None of them ever receives a photo. The one-time unlock removes the ads, and the ad requests with them.
The app is free, and every feature works without paying — the full on-device scan, all ten review categories, Fast Review, the Keep, and video compression. A small ad supports it. No. Cleanroom only ever suggests. It sorts your library and shows what each pile is costing you in gigabytes, but nothing is deleted, moved or sealed until you select it and confirm the batch. Anything you do delete goes to the Photos app's own Recently Deleted, where iOS keeps it for 30 days — so even a confirmed deletion is reversible for a month.
Compression only ever applies to videos — Cleanroom never re-encodes a photo. A video is re-encoded to HEVC on your phone, and the app verifies that the new file genuinely plays before it offers to replace the original, so a failed compression can duplicate a video but can never lose one. You choose the preset, and the stronger presets do reduce the resolution to save more space. The app shows you the resolution and the measured size before and after, so the trade is something you can see rather than guess at. Keeping the original is an option, and it is on by default.
